AdSense Click-Thru Optimization

By max on August 30, 2010

The number of clicks a site or blog page receives by visitors on Google AdSense ads (which constitutes the CTR – Click-Thru Ratio – of that page or ad unit)  can vary dramatically according to size, positioning and type of the AdSense ads being published.

In order for the webmaster to conveniently assess the ads behaviour and possibly optimize it, Google offers the ‘Channels‘ feature. Channels can be set on your Google account web pages.

There are two types of Google AdSense channels: URL and Custom ones.

A Google AdSense URL channel can be assigned to a specific URL, being it the web site address or that of one of its subdirectories or pages.

The most useful channels, as far as AdSense ads click-thru optimization is concerned, are however represented by Custom channels.

After you have declared a new Custom channel in your Google AdSense account, you can attach it to a specific ad unit that you are using on a web page of yours.

The important thing is that if you display more than one ad unit on the same page, you can monitor the click-thru behaviour of each one of them by assigning different Custom channels, that is to say a specific Custom channel for each ad unit.

That way, by your Google AdSense stats you can then observe the click-thru each ad unit yields and therefore try and change size, position or type of any ad unit which appears to be performing poorly.

To assign a Custom channel to an ad unit, you need to insert o code line like the following one into the script of the ad unit:

google_ad_channel = “4455002571″;

The number in the statement is an example of the Custom channel different ID which is automatically generated by Google when you create the Custom channel.
