WordPress – General Settings
The WordPress General Settings page contains the following entries:
- Blog Title - You must think carefully about what to write in this field. The Blog Title will be displayed on your pages online and therefore it should convey a quick an effective lead as to what your blog is all about. Furthermore, the Blog Title will be probed by the web search engines, so you should insert into it useful keywords to facilitate their searches and have it more often included in their results.
- Tagline – This entry allows you to describe your blog, its purpose and contents with a few words. This description will also be displayed on top of your pages and it will be scanned by the web search engines as well. Therefore, you must be careful to fill it with the most opportune keywords. In practice, here you can expand with more words what you have already tried to achieve by the Blog Title.
- WordPress address (URL) – It indicates the location where your WordPress software is installed. It gets displayed automatically and normally you should not need to edit it.
- Blog address (URL) – It indicates the location where your WordPress database (homepage) is installed. Normally, it coincides with the WordPress address (URL), but you can change it if you want your your blog files to lie in a different directory than the WordPress software.
- E-mail address – This email address of yours will be used by WordPress for admin purposes, like the automatic notification to you of new users when they register to your blog.
- Membership – You tick it on if you wish to let people register to your blog. This can be useful, because the registration requires new users to insert also their email address, which can turn out helpful in the case of marketing activities by you.
- New User Default Role – This entry define the default relationship of new users to your blog. This should typically be ‘Subscriber’, but you can change it, according to your needs, to Administrator, Author, Contributor or Editor.
- The remaining entries Timezone, Date Format, Time Format and Week Starts On allow you to customize the format of the dates which will be appearing on your pages according to your geographical time zone. Just choose among the options you are given.
