WordPress – Writing Settings

The WordPress Writing Settings page contains the following entries:

  • Size of the post box - Here you can specify the number of rows of the box where you can insert or update a new post. Just try and set different numbers of rows and see which one best suits your needs and tastes.
  • Formatting - By ticking the appropriate boxes you can decide if you want WordPress to automatically convert emoticons like :-) and :-P in your post to graphics on display and if it should automatically correct invalidly nested XHTML.
  • Default post category – This field lets you set the category that you wish to be assigned by default to your new posts. Of course, you can manually modify the category or categories your post should belong to on its inserting.
  • Default link category – When you create a new link, i.e. a new reference to an URL, it will be automatically assigned the link category you specify in this field. Again, you can change it to another category any time you insert a new link.
  • Remote Publishing – In this area you can set the way you may wish to publish your posts remotely. The possible options are Atom Publishing Protocol and XML-RPC. Normally, you do not need to modify the default settings of these fields.
  • Post via e-mail - If you want you can add new posts via e-mail rather than by the WordPress interface. To achieve that, you must properly set the fields in this section, that is to say the Mail Server, Port, Login Name and Password of a POP3 email account of yours. Be careful not to disclose this data to other people, otherwise they will be able to email new posts to your WordPress blog as well. In this area by the Default Mail Category field you can also declare the category the posts you email will be part of.
  • Update Services – When you publish a new post or modify an existing one, WordPress automatically notifies of the changes the site update services that you list in this area. The http://rpc.pingomatic.com/ update service is by default used by WordPress and that already does much of the job. If you wish, you can however add also other update services to the list. Update services are extremely important in that they notify the web search engines about new content in your blog, which potentially triggers more new traffic to your site.
